Slovenia launches €12 million grant program to boost solar power on public buildings

Slovenia’s Ministry of Environment, Climate and Energy has introduced a public funding program totaling 12 million euros to support the installation of solar power systems on public buildings and parking areas. This initiative is part of the country’s Recovery and Resilience Plan and will run through 2025 and 2026.

The grants, which do not require repayment, are aimed at solar installations that will supply energy to public buildings, auxiliary facilities, and paved parking lots on municipally or state-owned land designated for construction. Each project must have a minimum installed capacity of 1 MW. Energy storage systems can also be included if fully integrated with the solar setup. Only new equipment for electricity generation and storage qualifies for funding to ensure efficiency and long-term economic benefits.

Eligible applicants include municipalities applying alone or as lead partners in consortia with other municipalities. They can also partner with public institutions, government agencies, and other state-established organizations. Funding is awarded once a co-financing agreement is signed.

Applications are due by 20 June 2025. If funds remain after this date, additional application rounds will be announced.

The program aims to accelerate the public sector’s energy transition and improve climate resilience by expanding renewable energy use. It also supports Slovenia’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet national and EU climate goals.
