Romania: Retele Electrice launches €26 million tender to upgrade power grid

Retele Electrice Romania, part of the PPC group, has launched a major public procurement process to acquire advanced equipment for modernizing the national electricity distribution network. The tender, valued at over €26 million (excluding VAT), focuses on purchasing 24 kV prefabricated equipment for secondary substations, supporting investment projects planned for 2025 and 2026.

This initiative is a key step in the company’s strategy to improve the resilience and efficiency of its infrastructure, ensuring the network is better equipped to handle the impacts of climate change and the evolving demands of consumers, prosumers, and energy producers. The new equipment will help provide more flexible and efficient distribution services, essential in adapting to trends like urban expansion and the decentralization of energy production, which is reshaping traditional energy flows.

The contract tied to the tender will span three years. As part of its sustainability efforts, Retele Electrice Romania has included environmental criteria in the bidding process. Suppliers who use recyclable packaging will receive additional points during the technical evaluation, highlighting the company’s focus on green practices and responsible sourcing.

In its broader investment plan, the company is allocating more than €145 million to infrastructure development in 2024. It is also progressing with major projects in Banat, Dobrogea, and Muntenia, with support from EU funding programs totaling €280 million. These projects are scheduled for completion between 2026 and 2029.

Additionally, Retele Electrice Romania is rapidly expanding the rollout of smart meters, aiming to install around two million units by the end of 2025. This would make it the leading electricity distribution operator in Romania in terms of smart metering coverage.
