Romania: EDP opens 60 MW Albina solar power plant near Timisoara, boosting renewable energy capacity

Portuguese energy company EDP has officially inaugurated a new solar facility near Timisoara, marking a major milestone in Romania’s renewable energy development. The Albina solar power plant, with an installed capacity of 60 MW, is now the largest solar project in Timis county.

The Albina plant has already started generating electricity, adding valuable capacity to Romania’s electricity network. This privately funded project underscores Romania’s increasing attractiveness for large-scale clean energy investments. Minister of Energy Sebastian Burduja highlighted that projects like Albina, along with the expected start of electricity production at Mintia by the end of the year, demonstrate the country’s ability to attract credible investors for ambitious energy ventures.

Minister Burduja acknowledged the longstanding challenges in the energy sector and stressed that the Ministry cannot arbitrarily control energy prices or promise unrealistic measures such as free electricity or drastically reduced fuel costs. Instead, the government’s role is to foster an environment conducive to investment by securing European funds through transparent competitive programs focused on developing new energy capacities, upgrading infrastructure, enhancing storage, and improving energy efficiency. A stable and fair legislative framework remains essential for building investor confidence and ensuring a secure and sustainable energy future for Romania.

Over the past two years, these efforts have resulted in an unprecedented investment influx exceeding 14 billion euros into Romania’s energy sector — the highest since 1989. During this period, no production capacities were shut down, and all promised legislative measures and programs were implemented. According to the Minister, these actions are critical to providing reliable, affordable, and environmentally friendly energy.

The Albina solar plant is expected to generate around 67 GWh of green electricity annually, enough to power nearly 40,000 homes. EDP, already a leading clean energy provider in Romania, now operates over 570 MW of renewable capacity and produces more than 1,200 GWh each year. The electricity produced at Albina will help reduce Romania’s reliance on imports, support market price stability, and attract further investment in the sector.
