North Macedonia’s electricity transmission system operator MEPSO has issued a new tender for the construction of a 400 kV transmission line that will connect the country with Albania. This follows the termination of a previous contract due to the contractor’s failure to meet agreed obligations.
The new transmission line is set to begin in Bitola and continue toward the Albanian border, passing through the city of Ohrid. Interested bidders have until 9 June 2025 to submit their offers.
The original contract for the project was signed in February 2020 with the Bosnian company Energoinvest. Valued at 17.2 million euros, the agreement set a completion deadline of 30 months, expiring on 30 May 2023. However, by late 2024, MEPSO terminated the deal, citing the contractor’s failure to fulfill commitments and its demands for additional payments, which obstructed further progress.
According to MEPSO, only 24 out of 269 planned pillar foundations were completed, and just over half of the necessary equipment—51.2%—was delivered. Currently, Albania remains the only neighboring country without an electricity interconnection with North Macedonia.
