Altaaqa wins Romanian approvals for 63 MW solar portfolio paired with 80 MWh batteries

Saudi renewable-energy developer Altaaqa Renewables has received regulatory approval for two Romanian photovoltaic developments with battery storage systems in the Dobrogea region. The projects, Cuza Voda 1 and Cuza Voda 2, will have a combined solar capacity of 63 MW.

Romanian energy regulator ANRE’s approval brings both developments to ready-to-build status. Construction is expected to start in the first quarter of 2027, with commercial operation targeted by the end of 2028.

Project capacity and storage systems

Cuza Voda 2, the larger project, will pair 34.7 MW of solar capacity with an 11.29 MW/45.13 MWh battery. Cuza Voda 1 will add 28.3 MW of photovoltaic capacity alongside an 8.94 MW/35.1 MWh storage system.

Combined, the two batteries will provide 20.23 MW of discharge capacity and around 80 MWh of storage.

Storage role in renewable generation

The batteries are designed to shift some electricity generated during periods of high solar output to later hours. This is intended to improve the projects’ ability to manage grid deliveries and capture higher-value periods in the wholesale market.

The developments reflect a broader change in Romania’s renewable-energy pipeline, where new solar capacity is increasingly planned with storage instead of as stand-alone photovoltaic generation. Storage gives developers greater flexibility in managing increasingly volatile intraday generation and electricity prices.
