Romania: Hidroelectrica launches major modernization project for Stejaru hydropower plant

Romanian electricity producer Hidroelectrica has signed a contract for the comprehensive modernization of its Stejaru hydropower plant in Neamț County, representing one of the company’s largest investment projects to date. The agreement, valued at 97.5 million euros excluding VAT, has been awarded to Hidroserv, a subsidiary of Hidroelectrica.

The project will be fully financed from Hidroelectrica’s own resources, following an open tender in which the winning bid was selected based on the best quality-price ratio. The 66-month contract covers design, equipment supply, installation, commissioning, and post-implementation monitoring. The modernization will focus on upgrading the plant’s four Type I hydro units (HA1–HA4) as well as its general installations, aiming to boost energy efficiency, enhance operational safety, and extend the technical lifespan of critical equipment.

Stejaru HPP, part of the Bistrița River hydro system, is recognized as a technological landmark in Romania’s electricity sector. Its refurbishment is seen as a strategic measure to strengthen Hidroelectrica’s key production assets. As the country’s largest renewable energy producer, Hidroelectrica currently operates 188 hydropower plants with a combined capacity of 6.4 GW, alongside the 108 MW Crucea wind farm.
