Bulgaria reports strong growth in electricity production and consumption in first half of 2025

According to data released by the Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO, electricity production in Bulgaria increased by 11.81% in the period from January 1 to June 1, 2025, compared to the same period in 2024, reaching a total of 17.79 terawatt-hours (TWh).

During the same timeframe, Bulgaria’s electricity consumption rose by 7.82%, totaling 16.89 TWh. As a result, net electricity exports reached 0.9 TWh in 2025.

Baseload power plants, including coal and nuclear facilities, generated 13.64 TWh of electricity in the first half of 2025, marking a 15.2% increase compared to 2024.

The share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources (RES) also grew significantly. In the transmission network, RES output rose by 15.67% to 1,425.1 gigawatt-hours (GWh), while in the country’s distribution network, the RES share increased by 22.15%, reaching 1,524.6 GWh.
