SEEPEX opens Serbia to negative power prices as October rates top EUR 300/MWh

Serbia’s power exchange SEEPEX introduced negative electricity prices for delivery from 6 May 2026, adding a new price signal for generators and investors assessing flexibility. The market’s 2026 price range also included scarcity-hour prices above EUR 300/MWh, alongside periods of surplus. The contrast puts storage’s ability to respond to changing market conditions in focus.

The first negative day-ahead clearing price was recorded on 10 May 2026 for the 14:00–15:00 delivery hour. The price was -EUR 0.01/MWh, with 673.4 MWh traded. Later in May, the first negative intraday trades followed, with a volume-weighted average price of -EUR 8.83/MWh for one delivery hour.

Prices moved sharply in the other direction in autumn. On 30 October 2026, SEEPEX baseload reached EUR 303.29/MWh and peakload reached EUR 331.30/MWh. Trading volumes in October 2026 were above half a terawatt-hour, showing that the market recorded substantial activity alongside the high prices.

The spring surplus signals and autumn scarcity show why storage is no longer assessed only as infrastructure supporting renewable generation. Negative prices increase the value of flexible charging, but the hours remain limited and can be unpredictable. Buying electricity during negative-price periods alone is therefore not a durable commercial opportunity for developers.

Storage can instead manage a portfolio across day-ahead, intraday and balancing markets. Batteries can respond when the market moves away from the central forecast, making flexibility relevant across different market conditions rather than only during surplus hours. The shift between negative and high prices gives storage a role in managing exposure to both ends of the price range.

Negative prices also expose fixed-output renewable projects to capture-price risk. A co-located or contracted battery can protect some of that downside. Serbia’s first year of negative prices strengthened the investment case for storage while raising the analytical standard for renewable projects financed without storage.
