Romania: Natural gas imports surge in H1 2025, domestic production set to grow through 2027

According to data from the National Institute for Statistics (INS), natural gas imports in the first half of 2025 reached 1.066 million tons of oil equivalent, representing a 52.6% increase, or 439,900 tons more than the same period in 2024. In contrast, domestic natural gas production during this period totaled 3.731 million tons of oil equivalent, down 1.9% (71,800 tons) compared to the first half of last year.

The National Strategy and Forecasting Commission (CNSP) projects that domestic production will grow at an average annual rate of 1.7% by 2027. The latest Energy Balance Forecast estimates natural gas production at 7.79 million tons of oil equivalent in 2025 (+1.5%), 7.907 million tons in 2026 (+1.5%), and 8.176 million tons in 2027 (+3.4%).

Imports are expected to gradually decline, with a sharper reduction anticipated around 2027, reflecting the ramp-up of domestic production from new capacities while maintaining transit to foreign markets. CNSP forecasts natural gas imports of 2.211 million tons of oil equivalent in 2025 (-7.6%), 2.15 million tons in 2026 (-2.7%), and 2.022 million tons in 2027 (-6%).
