Distributie Energie Electrica Romania (DEER) has announced the largest procurement and installation program in the company’s history, committing to deploy 1.1 million smart meters across its service territory. This ambitious investment aims to accelerate the modernization of Romania’s electricity distribution network and support the broader transition to a fully digital energy system.
The initiative is part of DEER’s long-term strategy to replace traditional meters with advanced metering infrastructure capable of delivering real-time consumption data, improving billing accuracy, reducing technical and non-technical losses, and enabling faster detection and resolution of outages.
According to General Director Mihaela Rodica Suciu, the contract marks a new era for the company, offering consumers greater transparency and higher quality service as digital tools become integrated into everyday operations.
Work on the project is expected to begin by the end of the year, with the rollout carried out in multiple phases. All smart meters are projected to be installed by the end of 2028.
Through this large-scale deployment, DEER reinforces its role in upgrading Romania’s distribution networks and supporting both national and EU energy transition and digitalization goals.
