Power demand divergence in Europe as Germany and Portugal rise, Italy falls

Weekly electricity demand changes across major European markets

During the week of September 14, electricity demand rose in Belgium, Germany and Portugal versus the previous week. Belgium recorded the strongest increase, with demand up 1.5% after two consecutive weeks of declines. Germany followed with a 1.4% rise, extending its growth streak to four consecutive weeks, while Portugal posted a 1.0% increase for the third week in a row.

Demand moved in the opposite direction in Italy, Spain, Great Britain and France during the same period. Italy saw the steepest fall at 7.3%, while Spain and Great Britain each declined by 4.0%. France recorded a more moderate decrease of 1.0%, with Italy, Spain and France each registering lower demand for the second consecutive week.

Temperature shifts alongside demand movements

Average temperatures declined across Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany and France during the week of September 14. Italy recorded the largest temperature drop at 1.8°C, followed by Spain at 1.3°C and Portugal at 1.2°C. Germany and France saw smaller declines of 0.4°C and 0.2°C, respectively.

In contrast, average temperatures increased by 0.5°C in both Great Britain and Belgium over the same week. These temperature changes coincided with the differing direction of electricity demand across the listed markets.

AleaSoft outlook for the week starting September 21

For the week beginning September 21, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting expects electricity demand to increase in Portugal. The forecast also calls for demand to decline in Italy, Germany, France, Belgium, Great Britain and Spain.

AleaSoft reports that its outlook indicates continued divergence in electricity consumption trends across major European markets, based on its forecast for the period starting September 21.
