Electricity providers in Greece have announced price hikes of up to 17% for May, even as wholesale electricity prices continue to decline. The average wholesale price fell by around 16% last month, dropping to €89 per megawatt-hour, yet retail rates—particularly on green tariffs—have risen significantly.
Green tariffs, which are used by approximately 72.4% of households in Greece (about 5.3 million consumers based on 2024 data from the Regulatory Authority for Energy), have seen notable increases. The average cost per kilowatt-hour now stands at 14.4 cents, marking a 7% rise from the previous month.
Several major electricity providers have raised their rates even more sharply. Public Power Corporation (ΔΕΗ) increased its tariff from 11.6 cents in April to 13.6 cents per kWh—a jump of 16.5%. Elin followed with a 16.9% hike to 12.2 cents per kWh, Eunice raised prices by 13.9% to 13.2 cents, while Heron pushed rates up by 14.6% to 14.3 cents per kWh.
Meanwhile, some providers have chosen to maintain their current pricing. Protergia kept its rate at 15.9 cents per kWh, NRG held steady at 15.8 cents, and Zenith remained at 16.02 cents per kWh.
