Bulgaria sees surge in electricity production and exports in 2025

According to data from the Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO, electricity production in Bulgaria between 1 January and 17 August 2025 rose by 9.2 percent compared to the same period in 2024, reaching 25.81 TWh.

Electricity consumption in the same period increased by 5.98 percent, totaling 24.2 TWh. As a result, net electricity exports amounted to 1.61 TWh in 2025. Baseload power plants, including coal and nuclear facilities, generated 18.49 TWh of electricity in 2025, which is 9.37 percent more than in 2024.

The share of electricity from renewable energy sources in the transmission network grew by 20.25 percent to 2,640.7 GWh, while renewable generation in the distribution network rose by 24.55 percent to 2,674.8 GWh.
