Greece lifts net power exports 52.83% to 208.38 GWh, remains region’s cheapest market

Greece raised net electricity exports by 52.83% to 208.38 GWh in the week to November 1, remaining the lowest-priced of seven major regional power markets tracked by IENE.

The weekly average day-ahead price reached €255.04/MWh, up €25.62/MWh. It was €32.22/MWh below Romania’s price and €6.72/MWh below Italy’s.

Wind generation increased by 193.9%, almost tripling, while solar output fell by 42.2%. Combined wind and solar production rose by 7.2%. Hydropower declined by 3.80%, while gas-fired generation climbed by 13.40%, helping total thermal output increase by 10.38%. Electricity demand grew by 1.64%.

The combination of stronger wind and gas-fired generation and higher net exports pointed to a change in Greece’s regional supply role during the week. Lower prices and higher exports do not guarantee neighboring buyers can obtain Greek electricity at Greece’s clearing price: available interconnector capacity and hourly price formation affect access. Traders use Greece’s discount to assess whether supply from southeastern Europe can ease higher-priced markets to the north and west.
