CROPEX September prices rise as trading volume declines from August

Electricity prices on Croatia’s CROPEX exchange increased in September even though traded volumes were lower than in August. The change lifted wholesale procurement costs while exchange activity remained above year-earlier levels. CROPEX data show that price movements occurred alongside a month-on-month reduction in turnover.

Total electricity traded on the exchange reached 1.364 TWh. This was down 9.9% compared with August but up 25% versus September 2025. The day-ahead market accounted for 902.8 GWh, while intraday trading reached 461.1 GWh. Average daily day-ahead turnover was approximately 30.1 GWh.

In September, the average day-ahead baseload price rose by 14% to €172.80/MWh. The peak-load average increased by 15.7% to €143.86/MWh. Peak-load electricity was about €28.94/MWh cheaper than baseload. The intraday market averaged €175.40/MWh, slightly above the day-ahead baseload level.

CROPEX is jointly owned by transmission operator HOPS and electricity market operator HROTE. Its day-ahead market started operating in 2016, followed by intraday trading in 2017. Coupling through the Croatian-Slovenian border began in 2018.

September’s figures indicate continued growth in exchange activity compared with last year. At the same time, prices rose while monthly turnover was lower, reflecting differences between liquidity levels and the cost of securing electricity.
