North Macedonia MEMO day-ahead electricity volumes rise 74% as September prices increase

Electricity traded on North Macedonia’s MEMO day-ahead exchange increased 74% year on year to 179.2 GWh in September. The rise coincided with higher September prices, reflecting greater activity on the organised market. Volumes still declined compared with the previous month, according to exchange data.

Trading volumes fell 10.3% from August. Over the same period, the average clearing price rose 10% month on month to €150.49/MWh. Average daily trading reached approximately 5,973 MWh.

The peak-period average price was reported at €121.40/MWh, below the overall monthly average. The difference between peak-period and overall levels indicates that delivery hours affect purchasing costs and generation revenues. Peak-period pricing was therefore lower than the monthly clearing outcome.

The exchange was launched in May 2023. It is handling substantially more electricity than a year earlier, when September trading totalled approximately 102.9 GWh. Higher annual turnover points to a larger market base, while the month-on-month decline shows activity remains variable.

For participants, September combined higher trading volumes than a year earlier with a higher average procurement price than in August. The gap between peak-period and overall prices also shows that monthly baseload averages alone cannot fully describe exposure. The timing of consumption and production remains material to realised costs and returns.
