Solar output increases while wind generation falls across major European markets

In the week of September 21, solar photovoltaic generation rose across most of Europe’s major electricity markets compared with the previous week. Germany recorded the strongest increase, with output up by 18%, followed by France at 5.9% and Italy at 3.9%. Spain posted a 0.9% increase. The four markets reversed declines seen over the previous two weeks, while Portugal reported solar output down 4.9%, its second consecutive weekly fall.

For the week of September 28, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting expects solar generation to increase in Italy. The forecast also calls for solar output to decline in Germany and Spain. The outlooks indicate continued differences in solar production across Europe as seasonal conditions change.

Wind generation trends during late September

Wind generation moved in the opposite direction during the fourth week of September, falling in most major European electricity markets compared with the previous week. Portugal recorded the largest decrease at 54%, followed by Germany with a 36% decline. Wind output fell by 30% in France and 27% in Spain, with all four markets reversing the increases from the prior week.

Italy was the main exception, with wind generation rising by 68% after declining during the previous week. For the week of September 28, AleaSoft forecasts further wind increases in France, Portugal, and Spain. In contrast, wind output is expected to decline in Germany and Italy.

AleaSoft reports that solar and wind movements together underline ongoing volatility in renewable electricity output across Europe. It also cites weather conditions and seasonal patterns as key factors affecting renewable generation and electricity market dynamics in the coming weeks.
