Romania: OMV Petrom secures long-term used cooking oil supply from Astra Bioplant for sustainable fuel production

OMV Petrom has finalized a major supply agreement with Astra Bioplant, a leading Bulgarian producer of biodiesel and a member of the Bulmarket group. The contract covers the purchase of pre-treated used cooking oil, a key raw material for the company’s future production of sustainable fuels. Set to begin in 2028, the agreement will run for five years, with an option to extend it for an additional three years.

This deal follows a similar agreement signed in June 2024 with Expur, a major edible oil producer in Romania. Combined, the two contracts secure more than 80 percent of the raw materials required for the first eight years of production at OMV Petrom’s new SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) and HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) facility, which is currently under construction.

Earlier in the year, OMV Petrom began construction work at its Petrobrazi refinery to build specialized units for producing SAF and HVO biodiesel. With an investment of 750 million euros, the project will provide an annual production capacity of 250,000 tons, positioning OMV Petrom as the first large-scale producer of sustainable fuels in Southeastern Europe.

The supply agreement with Astra Bioplant includes up to 600,000 tons of pre-treated used cooking oil, with pricing linked to international market benchmarks. At current rates, the contract is estimated to be worth over 700 million euros. This feedstock will play a crucial role in OMV Petrom’s sustainable fuel production, supporting the company’s broader green energy strategy and strengthening its leadership in clean fuel solutions across the region.
