Bulgarian Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov announced that another shipment of pipes is expected to arrive at the port of Burgas in the coming weeks, marking continued progress on the Vertical Gas Corridor project. He emphasized Bulgaria’s growing role as a key player in ensuring regional energy stability through the development of critical infrastructure.
Minister Stankov highlighted that Bulgaria is demonstrating leadership in energy diversification through real actions rather than just promises. He noted that Bulgaria was the first country to begin actual construction on the Vertical Gas Corridor just a few weeks ago. The project has strong support from several regional governments, including Greece, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Moldova, and Ukraine. These countries, which have long depended on a single supplier and supply route for natural gas, view Bulgaria as a crucial partner in creating alternative and more secure energy pathways.
Stankov also discussed broader efforts to strengthen both energy and digital infrastructure throughout the Balkans. He stressed that lasting regional stability in the modern era will depend on building strong and reliable systems, not just historical relationships or emotional connections.
Looking to the future, the minister outlined plans for green energy corridors that will connect Bulgaria and Europe to clean energy sources in the Caspian region. The envisioned corridor would pass through Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey, cross the Black Sea, and continue into Bulgaria before extending toward Central and Western Europe.
